It's Thursday

I have a new refrigerator and stove coming tomorrow - I'm so excited. I was trying not to whine, but I hadn't really paid attention to the stove when we bought this house. It's fine but it's basic. I like to cook a lot so it wasn't making me really happy. So dh bought me a new one because he's sweet. and a matching refrigerator because apparently the refrigerator was driving HIM nuts. That's coming tomorrow.

Today, his sister is visiting. We haven't seen her since their parents funeral which was .... six years ago I do believe. I've been straightening up and cleaning, etc. It'll be nice to see her.

I've got pictures to post for the next NC Photojournal installment. We went to the Durham Museum of Science yesterday but I don't have time to post them today. I'll work on that tomorrow.

Here's my dorky moment of the day. I am supposed to make a dessert for the Church cookout tomorrow. I decided to make Moon Pies. I thought I got all the ingredients at the store but I was just going by memory. I looked at the recipe and saw that I am missing evaporated milk and butter. I write these two items on a list along with some stuff to pick up for dinner (hopefully my SIL will be staying for dinner). I get to the store, do my shopping get home and guess what? I didn't get the evaporated milk or the butter! I even had the list in my hand the whole time!

So hopefully the new stove will come in time tomorrow so that I can make them. If not, I'll have to see if I can find something in the grocery store bakery. I'm such a dork!

NC Photojournal Installment Cont.

It's a good thing that I don't have another trip to post because it's Sunday and I'm not even done posting about Friday!! I still need to tell you about the creepy barn we saw. First, we'll share some of our dress up pictures. The second floor of that store was so fun!

On the way home we came upon a barn and we stopped. When I went to take a picture of it I actually shuddered. Very bad feng shui! Tell me this isn't the creepiest barn you've ever seen.

Something very bad happened here - it's obvious when you see the chimney up a bit from the barn and you can feel it. Or at least I could!

I took some pictures because it isn't every day when you actually FEEL a place. I can still feel it looking at the pictures. Y'all are prolly looking at the pics thinking "what the heck is she talking about?" But I'm telling you - serious heebie jeebies!

So that's our day at Pittsboro! I'm going to thumb through the book in a bit and see what to hit next. I'm thinking some gardens maybe.

NC Photojournal Installment

I've decided to put a name to the new direction I've taken my blog. Not to say it won't contain my inner ramblings - because it will. I think, though if I name certain sections a specific thing then there can be an expectation that it will contain pictures I've taken while getting know my area. That title will be my NC Photojournal. Original, right?

Today - most of our time was spent at the Church solidifying new membership and all that fun stuff. We are now official members of the Church. Tomorrow will BE Church so there won't be any new pictures unless I can get over feeling like a dork about bringing my camera to Church and taking pictures. I should - it's a beautiful Church. We'll see if I can get over that particular .. what would you even call it, a phobia? Or should one even TAKE a picture of their Church? Maybe that's why it feels a bit wrong? I'll have to ask dh about that.

In the meantime, there's pictures to post. And if it's not too late I need to come up with "What Screams Summer" for the Dawgs. It's past time I got back into the swing of that as well.

Friday we visited a small town called Pittsboro, though actually I think it's bigger than a town. I read that it is the county seat so it holds the county courts... the county is Gratham I believe? I may have to look that up and make sure I got that right. Here is the Main Street and one of the Court Houses.

The Main Street has little shops, mostly antique stores some art galleries and a couple of interesting stores that sell crystals and the like. One store at the end was a very interesting hodgepodge of French antiques, french style pottery and African art. Abigail and I were on our own and we poked around in the shops kinda hoping to find something cool and unusual for a Father's Day gift (which we didn't find and that upset Abigail). We stopped for lunch at this cool old fashioned soda shop. Being a good Mother, I, of course, insisted on a healthy lunch. I had chili cheese fries and Abigail had a hot fudge sundae with chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top! Abigail took the picture of the front. I had to straighten it a bit that's why the edges are funky. She did good though.

After lunch we were poking around and came across THIS.

Now how can you NOT go in a store that has that sitting outside. Especially when you peek in and see these.

The first floor stuff was, ehhh. But the second floor was a Play Dress Up paradise. Shoes, old fashioned clothes, western clothes, kimonos, hats and hats and hats! I'll post some pics of us trying on hats in a second installment. DH wants to go look at refrigerators.

Before I post about today's NC Adventure

I thought I would put up a couple of pictures of another southern tree - since I was kinda sorta on the subject. From the Hickory Tree in my backyard to these beautiful trees found at the neighborhood entrance and throughout the streets is ...........

The beautiful Magnolia tree. Lots of blossoms this time of year. They are so pretty!

OK never mind - uploading that one pic was painfully long so we'll just leave it at that one! I've got some pictures of our new downtown - I might wait to put those up though because I haven't finished them. I may need to add a few then put them up.

Abigail and I explored the town of Pittsboro today. Photos and story posting soon so stay tuned!

The Hickory Nut Tree

BLAM!

(A minute passes.)

BLAM!

(Another half-minute or so.)

BLAM!

OUCH - that was my head!

In my backyard is a very pretty tree - it's a Hickory

-----------------------------------------

Hickory fruits consist of hard-shelled nuts, surrounded by a woody husk. The husk varies among species as to how easily it splits and whether the sutures are winged along part or all of their length. The nuts are edible, although they vary in size and taste

As you can see this is a pretty big tree

So there's a long way for this nut to fall! You can hear them hitting the deck or patio. The other day I was putting the dogs out and as timing would have it - whack! Right on the head. Owie!!

I'm told that these nuts are edible but hard to get out of the shell. Something about boiling involved. It's supposedly related to the pecan. Ever since Abigail found out they were edible she's been gathering them up. I thought I was gonna be cornered into boiling them and attempting to prepare them somehow but some of the neighborhood boys got together with her and they had a fun afternoon with a hammer mashing them instead.

It's Tuesday

Sunday/Monday was kinda busy going back and forth on an offer for our old house. The contract is pending now so we will keep our fingers crossed that it all goes through.

The other site I was talking about - where I was trying to make friends? They decided to get a little nasty so I left and that as they say is that. I'm a little hurt. I thought I was putting forth an effort. I'll get to a mad stage hopefully soon and be at the spot I can acknowledge it's better I find out now what kind of people they are I guess than further down the road.

We spent the afternoon at the bank getting things set up so I haven't had a chance to set up an adventure/picture thing. We'll work on that tomorrow.

Happy Friday

So do you want to see my old house? Know anyone who wants to move to Cincinnati?

it looks all lonely

The park event went ok. It was a bit awkward. I forced myself to go up and introduce myself to people. As with any group I observed that they had their own "small groups" or I guess you would call them cliques already formed. So I tried but I'm not sure how successful I was and I'm definately not in the "inner circle". What Tigger said about Scrapdawgs is prolly right on the money because I know we are the same way there. It isn't bad - it just is.

The park was a pleasant surprise though. I took Abigail with me and they had rides there - a carousel, train, little plane rides and a pretty large playground. So we rode the train and the carousel and had some fun.

Missy posted on the Dawgs about starting a photographic adventure that's inspired me. I've got a few books about places to go and see in NC and I am going to haul out my camera and do just that and log the journey. Y'all get ready to start learning some things about North Carolina!

Whoops I haven't updated in awhile!

I've got the first floor of the new house reasonably set up. Lots of work to do in the tv bonus room, scrap room, Abigail's room, garage ... but let's not go there! We've got NC drivers licenses and plates.

here are some tidbits - we've got two showings on our old house scheduled for today. the real estate agent says the house is looking good after the new carpet got in and the walls painted.... I'll admit I'm kind of glad I wasn't around for when they ripped that old carpet up. But hey, all of it was nine years old.

kind of on that subject - the new house has mostly hard wood floors on the first floor. I'm finding it a lot easier to take care of than carpeting. I don't think I want to go back to all carpeting. which since I've decided I'm not moving again EVER that's probably a good thing.

I'm trying hard to make new friends. There's a Mommies group I joined. I met some for coffee and we'll get together again this afternoon at the park. We're doing a potluck picnic type thing. I so hope I've got something in common with some of them. (well I do with a couple of them they are planning a scrap day at an LSS in Greensboro) Those of you that really know me, know that doing stuff like this is really outside my comfort zone. If things go well I think I'll have them over to the house for a little coffee chatfest. Cross your fingers!

The other thing new is Church. We tried one of the local ones out and liked it. They do a lot with kids there which will keep the girls active. They should meet some nice friends. I'm determined to be a lot more active there too - as far as members go they seem to have quite a few groups going.

Have I chatted enough yet? Let me think. Seems to me there was one more thing I wanted to post ... nope it's not coming to me. Oh! Boo is LOVING the screened porch. He spends most of his time snoozing out there on my red bath robe (I've quickly concluded I need to go find me a thin cotton one!). Anna likes to sit out there too she's just not into snoozing all day like the old man.

Last thing - I had another interview. For internet car sales. Apparently it didn't go well because they were going to call by yesterday and they didn't. Ah well the RIGHT one will come up.

That's it for now I think. I'll try to update more. I've gotta find my camera and join in some of the photo challenges now that things are settling more.
